Turmeric

Size and Shape: Fresh turmeric roots (tubers or rhizomes) are typically finger-like and vary in size depending on maturity. Ideal sizes range from 3 to 8 inches (7.5 to 20 cm) long, with a diameter of 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm). Avoid excessively large or small roots.

Skin: The skin of fresh turmeric should be smooth, thin, and light brown in color. Avoid roots with wrinkles, blemishes, cuts, or bruises.

Freshness: Fresh turmeric should feel firm and slightly bumpy. Wilted, soft, or mushy roots indicate age or improper storage.

Interior Color: When cut, the inner flesh of fresh turmeric should be a vibrant orange-yellow color. Avoid roots with a dull or pale interior color, which can indicate lower curcumin content (the active ingredient).
